As images of the terrorist commander’s corpse circulated on social media, Israeli officials said Thursday that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar had been killed by the Israel Defence Forces during an attack in Gaza.
Since 2017, Sinwar has been in charge of Hamas activities in Gaza. He is also thought to have played a major role in planning the October 7, 2023, attack in which 1,200 Israelis were slaughtered by Palestinian militants.
Israel has been ruthlessly attacking its Iran-backed adversaries in the area, killing Hamas political head Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in July and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut in September.
A senior Israeli government official told Politico that while it is “looking like” Sinwar was killed, his death has “not yet been confirmed,” and the Israel Defence Forces and the nation’s intelligence services are frantically searching for supporting evidence. The official was given anonymity to speak about the sensitive topic.
Sinwar and a number of other Hamas commanders were discovered inside the structure after IDF soldiers and Hamas gunmen engaged in a gunfight close to it. It’s unknown if Sinwar lived in the structure or was just visiting from somewhere else in Gaza.
