At the age of 33, France forward Antoine Griezmann declared his retirement from international football.
The 33-year-old Atletico Madrid player helped his nation win the 2018 World Cup by making 137 appearances, scoring 44 goals, and converted a penalty kick in the championship game as France defeated Croatia 4-2 in Moscow.
Along with his nation, he also won the 2021 Nations League.
“It is with a heart full of memories that I close this chapter of my life,” Griezmann posted. “Thank you for this magnificent, tricolor adventure and see you soon.”
“Today, with profound emotion, I announce my retirement as a France national team player,” he said. “After ten incredible years marked by challenges, successes and unforgettable moments, it’s time for me to turn the page and make room for the new generation.”
“Wearing this shirt has been an honor and a privilege,” he continued. “I leave the France national team with a sense of pride and gratitude. I had the honor of representing our country and the chance to experience extraordinary moments, like becoming a world champion.”
“I’ll continue to follow Les Bleus with passion. I’m convinced that the future is bright and I can’t wait to see the next generation shine.”
Griezmann’s announcement of retirement coincides with two weeks before France’s Nations League matches against Belgium and Israel.
The 33-year-old played his final game for his nation on September 9 in France’s 2-0 triumph against Belgium, coming off the bench.
In September, Griezmann made his France debut in a 3-1 Nations League loss to Italy. Three days later, he made his final appearance as a substitute in a 2-0 victory against Belgium.
Before the upcoming international break in October, when France plays Israel and Belgium in the Nations League, he made his decision public.
Since making his debut in 2014 under manager Didier Deschamps, Griezmann has been an integral part of the France team.
With six goals, he led the scoring at the 2016 Euros as host France finished second, losing to Portugal in the final.
Griezmann also participated in the 2022 World Cup final, in which Argentina defeated France on penalties following an exciting 3-3 draw.
