After being carried away by his head and mauled by a mountain lion, a five-year-old boy suffered severe injuries.
On Sunday, September 1, the boy was playing with a group of kids in Malibu Creek State Park in California when the mountain lion approached. He was with his family at the time.
The child was dragged into the adjacent woods by the monster, which locked its teeth around his head.
Â
“It was quite significant. His aunt informed KTLA that the mountain lion was not at all afraid.
Â
When the attack occurred at Tapia Park, there were perhaps forty other persons in the picnic area.
Â
To save his son, the father used only his bare hands to battle the mountain lion while the boy and bystanders cried out for assistance.
His aunt added: “Somebody screamed the baby’s name, and the dad started running.
Â
“The father grabbed the mountain lion with his hands and he just fought and then the mountain lion let go.”
After the child was transported to Northridge Hospital Medical Centre, non-life-threatening injuries were determined to have occurred.
Â
His eyes are thought to have been injured during the attack, and he sustained severe wounds and scrapes to his face.
Â
After the incident, the mountain lion was discovered nearby, and it stayed in a tree until State Parks officials could find it.
According to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, a ranger killed it because they believed it to be a threat to the public.
Â
The boy’s injuries and clothes samples matched those from the mountain lion, proving that they had killed the right animal.
Â
State Parks in California are currently looking into the attack.
Â
According to a statement: “On Sunday, September 1, at 4:21 p.m., there was a complaint of a mountain lion attack at Malibu Creek State Park. Los Angeles County Sheriff Deputies and California State Parks rangers responded.
“A family group from Woodland Hills was having a picnic at Malibu Creek State Park, consisting of at least six adults and a few children.
Â
“The children were playing in the immediate vicinity of the family’s picnic table when a mountain lion attacked a 5-year-old boy, causing significant but non-life-threatening injuries.
Â
“One or more adults charged at the lion, and it released the boy. Multiple witnesses saw the attack and observed the mountain lion climb up a nearby tree.
Â
“The lion remained in the tree until State Parks rangers arrived. In consultation with CDFW wildlife officers, they deemed the mountain lion a threat to public safety and a ranger euthanized it via firearm.
