At a mining site in the Butura town of Bokkos Local Government Area, Plateau State, four youths were killed in an attack by gunmen. The attack happened on a Friday night, at around nine o’clock in the evening.
The victims were working at the location when the gunmen, who were speaking in the Fulani dialect, opened fire, killing four people on the spot and injuring five more, according to Sabastine Magit, the president of the Butura Youth Movement.
Magit confirmed the names of the deceased as Bwefuk Musa, 21; Klingshak Dickson, 21; Promise Joshua, 20; and Nyam Abaka, 20.
“In yet another unprovoked assault on members of the Butura community, armed terrorists opened fire on innocent youths working at a mining site near the villages of Kuba and Maikatako in Bokkos LGA,” Magit said in a statement on Saturday, October 12.
“This attack occurred just four days after a tragic incident in the village of Wumat, where five members of a family, including a pregnant mother, lost their lives.”
Magit said that before neighbouring military forces could react, the attackers left the site. This most recent incident fits into a concerning pattern; in the previous month alone, Fulani attackers are suspected of killing around 20 members of the Butura community.
Tensions in the region are still high after the attack, and while the injured victims are receiving medical attention, local authorities and security personnel have been notified.
