Amorim has been named the next head coach of Manchester United.
The 39-year-old Portuguese has agreed to a deal that would keep him at Old Trafford until June 2027, with an additional year’s option. He will be joining from Lisbon club Sporting on November 11.
On November 24, he will coach his first United game at Ipswich.
Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to lead the first squad until Amorim joins, replacing Erik ten Hag, who was fired last month.
The club released the following statement:
‘Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ruben Amorim as Head Coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements.
He will join until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year, once he has fulfilled his obligations to his current club. He will join Manchester United on Monday 11 November.
Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football. Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP; the first of which was the club’s first title in 19 years.
Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to take charge of the team until Ruben joins.
Amorim, a former midfielder for Portugal and Benfica, retired from playing in 2017 and began his first management position at Braga two years later.
After joining Sporting in March 2020, the Portuguese became one of Europe’s most sought-after young coaches and led the team to two Primeira Liga championships.
In addition, Amorim has won the Portuguese League Cup, or Taca da Liga, three times: once with Braga and twice with Sporting.
