Residences honoring British-Nigerian Folajimi Olubunmi-Adewole, who passed away while attempting to save a woman who was drowning in the Thames, by naming built houses after him.

In honor of a young Nigerian man who lost his life attempting to save a woman from the Thames, over fifty new residences have been formally presented in south London, United Kingdom.

In April 2021, Folajimi Olubunmi-Adewole, then 20 years old, saw a woman fall off London Bridge and decided to swim after seeing her go into the sea at around midnight.

The coast guard and marine police saved the woman and another man who had dived in to save her.

The body of Mr. Olubunmi-Adewole, also known as Jimi, was discovered around six hours after he vanished from sight.

According to a BBC article from Saturday, July 27, 2024, the Folajimi Apartments on Alexis Street in south Bermondsey have been named in his honor.

The Southwark Council is the owner of 26 of the 56 apartments.

Helen Dennis, one of the local council members who attended the official opening last week, along with members of Mr. Olubunmi-Adewole’s family, called it “a great honour.”

“Jimi was such a brave young man and we hope these new homes will be a fitting tribute to his heroism life,” she continued in a post on X.

“The courage to jump to help a complete stranger in the Thames at night is quite astonishing,” the coroner remarked during the inquest into Mr. Olubunmi-Adewole’s death.
