The official return to duty of Phillip Shaibu, the impeached deputy governor of Edo State, has been made possible by the reinstatement of his security details.
This event follows the Federal High Court in Abuja’s Justice James Omotosho’s ruling, which deemed Shaibu’s impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly to be unlawful, unconstitutional, and void.
The court’s decision, which was handed down on Wednesday, confirmed that the 1999 Constitution’s modified sections 188 and 35 were broken during the impeachment procedure.
As a result, the court granted Shaibu’s request to have his pay and benefits reinstated, which became operative in April upon his impeachment.
In addition, a permanent injunction was ordered prohibiting the Edo State House of Assembly and Governor Godwin Obaseki from impeding Shaibu’s execution of his duties.
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, was ordered by the court to return his security information.
It should be mentioned that state legislature decided to impeach the deputy governor on the grounds that he had revealed official secrets, following a protracted legal struggle between Shaibu and Governor Obaseki.
Three months prior, the seven-member committee appointed by the Edo State Assembly ruled Shaibu guilty and suggested that he be impeached.
