The Labour Party’s problem appears to be taking on a new dimension when the party’s sole serving governor, Alex Otti, and presidential candidate for 2023, Peter Obi, were told they would not be receiving automatic tickets by the National Executive committee, headed by Julius Abure.
Abure called the Otti and Obi-led conference at Abia State a “betrayal” and “divisionary” attempt to appoint “new leadership” without the approval or authority of the National Executive Council.
The Abure-led NEC took this action in response to a gathering of party stakeholders on Abia last week that was organised by Alex Otti and Peter Obi. The conference called for a fresh convention to elect new party leaders because Abure’s term had ended and his NEC was not recognised by INEC.
The committee modified its earlier position on Peter Obi and Alex Otti’s automatic tickets for the 2027 elections on Monday after a meeting chaired by Abure. As of right now, the NEC has declared that all candidates are welcome to submit nominations.
